AIMST University had an inaugural CME/CPD on diabetes and an inter-university quiz contest to coincide with the World diabetes Day. With the active support of all the stake holders and key players, we were able to make it an annual event of national repute. The landmark report on global estimate of prevalence of diabetes in 2000 and projections for 2030, ( Diabetes Care 27:1047-1053, 2004) has published scary data, which is a wake up call for us.
Malaysia is among the countries with projections for a high increase in diabetic burden, estimated to be an increase by 148%. This event was held on November 14th in our University campus in conjunction with World Diabetes Day. The event was guaranteed to increase public awareness, and consequently attain some success in the prevention and control of diabetes, in keeping with the paramount vision of our Health Ministry of Health, Malaysia.
Dr. S. Nandakumar, Addl. Prof. of Medicine, AIMST University, Organizing Secretary of “DIABETES; PRESENT AND FUTURE ” gave his opening remarks on this important academic event. Then the Dean Dr.K.R.Sethuraman, School of Medicine welcomed gathering. Aimed at creating great awareness for Diabetes, this ambitious venture marked AIMST University’s desire to be recognized as a premiere university with invested interests in the health of the general public.
